Malaysia’s Fresh Durian Makes First Flight to Henan, Marking a NewChapter in Trade Relations

Zhengzhou, China – On August 25th, a historic moment occurred at Zhengzhou Airport’s North Cargo Area as the first shipment of fresh durian from Malaysia landed in Henan province. Thearrival marked a significant milestone in the bilateral trade relationship between China and Malaysia, as it was the first time Malaysian fresh durian was allowed into the Chinese mainland.

The Kuala Lumpur-Zhengzhou durian flight carried 1,500 boxes, weighing a total of 15 tons, encompassing 10 different varieties of the popular fruit. The durian arrived on the evening of August24th after a dedicated chartered flight journey.

This event comes amidst the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. The two countries formally signed an agreement in June this year, allowing Malaysia toexport fresh durian to China. Malaysia joins Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines as the only countries currently authorized to export fresh durian to China.

The imported durian is classified as tree-ripened, meaning it naturally ripens and falls from the durian tree. According to Datuk Zhu Peilin, President of FrogInternational Group and a Malaysian durian fruit merchant, The flesh of tree-ripened durian continues to ferment, and the fruit shell will crack open after approximately 72 hours, affecting the durian’s texture and taste. Therefore, tree-ripened durian demands extremely efficient logistics to ensure every step is seamlesslyconnected.

The direct flight to Henan ensures the durian reaches Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport in just 36 hours, minimizing the time it takes for the fruit to travel from Malaysian durian orchards to its destination. From there, the durian will be transported via planes, high-speed trains, or refrigerated trucks tovarious cities across China.

China is the world’s largest importer and consumer of durian, and Malaysia is its largest export market. However, previously, only frozen durian and its products were allowed into China. According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in 2022, Malaysia exported durianworth 1.14 billion Malaysian Ringgit, with 887 million Ringgit (77.8%) going to China.

This new trade opportunity not only strengthens economic ties between China and Malaysia but also highlights the flourishing development of Zhengzhou’s aviation hub. Guo Licheng, Director of theZhengzhou Airport Economic Comprehensive Pilot Zone Port Management Bureau, stated that from January to July this year, Zhengzhou Airport handled a total of 1,334.07 tons of imported fruits, representing a 242.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

The arrival of Malaysianfresh durian in Henan marks a significant step forward in the growing trade relationship between China and Malaysia. It is a testament to the commitment of both countries to facilitate cross-border trade and enhance economic cooperation. As the demand for fresh durian continues to rise in China, this new trade route is expected to further boost the Malaysiandurian industry and strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
