Philippines Accused of Ramming Chinese Coast Guard Vessel in South China Sea
BEIJING, August 25, 2024 -The Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) has accused a Philippine vessel of deliberately ramming a Chinese coast guard ship in the vicinity of the Spratly Islands in the SouthChina Sea.
In a statement released on Friday, CCG spokesperson Gan Yu alleged that the Philippine vessel, identified as BRP 3002, illegally entered waters near the Chinese-controlled Fiery Cross Reef without permission from the Chinese government. The CCG, according to the statement, then took measures to control the Philippine vessel.
At 2:12 PM(local time), the BRP 3002, ignoring repeated warnings from the Chinese side, deliberately rammed the CCG 21551 vessel, which was engaged in routine law enforcement activities, in an unprofessional anddangerous manner, Gan Yu stated. This resulted in a collision, with the full responsibility lying with the Philippine side.
The CCG spokesperson further warned the Philippines to immediately cease its incursions and provocations, adding that any consequences arising from such actions would be borne by the Philippine government.
The incident marksthe latest escalation of tensions between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea, a strategically vital waterway claimed in whole or in part by several countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.

Inrecent years, China has been building artificial islands and military installations in the disputed waters, raising concerns among its neighbors.
The Philippine government has yet to respond to the CCG’s accusations. However, the incident is likely to further strain relations between the two countries, which have been seeking to improve ties in recent years.
