Greek Oil Tanker Explodes and Catches Fire in Red Sea, Suspected Houthi Attack
Keywords: Oil tanker explosion, Red Sea,Houthis
Content:
A Greek-flagged oil tanker, the “Sounion,” exploded and caught fire in the Red Sea on August23, local time. The incident follows a previous attack on the vessel by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
According to the Associated Press, avideo released by the Houthis on social media late on August 23 showed three explosions on the “Sounion” followed by a fire. The AP analysis suggests that the simultaneous nature of the three explosions points towards pre-planted explosivesrather than a missile or drone attack.
On August 21, the “Sounion” was attacked by the Houthis approximately 140 kilometers west of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah. The vessel’s crew of over 20 abandoned ship and were later rescued by a French warship.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), managed by the Royal Navy, reported on August 23 that they had received reports of three fires on the “Sounion,” which appeared to be adrift. The “Sounion” was carrying 150,000 tons of crude oil, potentially posing a “catastrophic” threat to the surrounding marine environment.
The “Sounion” is owned by Delta Tankers, a company based in Athens. This is the third vessel belonging to the company to beattacked by the Houthis this month. The Houthis claim that the attack on the “Sounion” was partly due to Delta Tankers violating a ban on entering “occupied Palestinian ports.”
The Financial Times notes that the Houthis have not previously intentionally destroyed abandoned vessels, suggesting that this incident could mark a shiftin the group’s attack strategy in the Red Sea.
Since November last year, the Houthis have sunk two ships: the “Rubymar” in February and the “Tutor” in June. Neither of these vessels were carrying liquid cargo, and there were no reports of significant pollution.
The Associated Press reportsthat the Red Sea trade route, affected by the Houthi attacks, typically carries $1 trillion worth of goods annually. This incident has once again raised international concerns about the safety of the Red Sea shipping route and heightened tensions in the region.
