Sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur Swallows Indian Tourist, Search Continues

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — A sinkholeopened up on a street in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday morning, swallowing an Indian tourist and leaving her missing. Search and rescue efforts continued into the evening, but thewoman remained unaccounted for.

The incident occurred around 8:25 a.m. when the tourist was walking on the street. The ground suddenlygave way, creating a sinkhole about 8 meters deep, and she fell into it. Local police, firefighters, medical personnel, and civil defense teams rushed to the scene and initiated rescue operations. Dozens of rescuers participated, deployingexcavators, heavy trucks, and even sending personnel down into the pit to search for the missing woman.

However, after more than 10 hours of searching, the woman remained missing. A Kuala Lumpur police official said Wednesday evening thatthey had discovered an underground water flow at the bottom of the sinkhole, raising concerns that the woman may have been swept away by the current.

Despite the incident, the fire department deemed the area safe after an assessment, and the Kuala Lumpur City Council allowed businesses in the area to reopen on Thursday.

Search andrescue efforts are ongoing, with police and rescue personnel working tirelessly to locate the missing tourist. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of urban infrastructure, prompting authorities to strengthen inspections and maintenance of city roads to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
