Kuala Lumpur Sinkhole Swallows Indian Tourist, Search Continues

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — A sinkholeopened up on a street in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday morning, swallowing an Indian tourist who remains missing. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

The incident occurred at approximately8:25 a.m. local time when the woman was walking on the street. The ground suddenly gave way, creating a sinkhole about 8meters deep, and the woman fell into it.

Malaysian police, firefighters, medical personnel, and civil defense teams quickly arrived at the scene, deploying dozens of rescuers. Excavators, heavy trucks, and other equipment were alsoused in the search. Rescue workers even descended into the sinkhole to look for the missing woman.

However, after more than 10 hours of searching, she has yet to be found. Kuala Lumpur police officials said Wednesday evening thatthey had discovered an underground water flow at the bottom of the sinkhole, leading them to suspect that the woman may have been swept away by the current.

Despite the incident, the fire department, after an assessment, deemed the area safe. The Kuala Lumpur City Council also allowed businesses in the area to resume operations onThursday.

The search for the missing woman continues. Relevant authorities will continue to work diligently to find her.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of urban infrastructure and serves as a reminder for people to be cautious when traveling and avoid areas with potential safety hazards.

Authorities have stated that they willinvestigate the cause of the incident and take measures to strengthen urban infrastructure safety to prevent similar events from happening again.
