Wuxi, Jiangsu, August 23 (Xinhua) – Yu Yunfeng, Director of the Center forLanguage Exchange and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of China, stated at a symposium in Wuxi on August 23 that promoting international Chinese language education is acrucial measure to facilitate practical cooperation between China and other countries, foster people-to-people connectivity, and serve as a vital tool to enhance civilizational exchange and build a shared future for humanity.
Data shows that over 190countries and regions worldwide have implemented Chinese language education, with 85 countries incorporating it into their national education systems. Yu Yunfeng pointed out that the overall atmosphere surrounding Chinese language learning has shifted from an initial “going out” phase to a”I want to learn” mindset among foreign populations. The practical value of learning Chinese is becoming increasingly evident, with strong demand from countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative for China’s support in Chinese language education and the enhancement of professional skills.
However, the development of international Chinese language education faces numerous challenges.Yu Yunfeng acknowledged that while some countries have included Chinese in their national education systems, it remains largely pilot-based and has yet to achieve systematic and large-scale implementation. Additionally, the capacity to support international Chinese language education remains inadequate, with the need to expand the scale of professional and specialized teaching staff, address theshortage of non-common language teachers, and strengthen the development of digital and “Chinese + vocational education” resources.
To address these challenges, Yu Yunfeng proposed three recommendations:
First, refine the international Chinese language education teaching system and teacher training system. This involves deploying teaching consultants, developing teaching syllabuses, and conducting local teacher training to support more countries in deeply integrating Chinese into their national education systems.
Second, promote the coordinated development and deep integration of Chinese language education with vocational and professional education. By actively aligning with overseas needs, enhancing the practicality and functionality of Chinese, tangible benefits can be brought to learners’ personalgrowth and the socio-economic development of their respective countries.
Third, leverage new technologies to empower international Chinese language education. This involves providing overseas learners with a more convenient and high-quality learning experience.
Yu Yunfeng emphasized that international Chinese language education is a critical tool for promoting civilizational exchange and serves asa bridge for building a shared future for humanity. In the future, China will continue to strengthen international Chinese language education cooperation to contribute to the promotion of global civilizational exchange and the construction of a shared future for humanity.
The 2024 Minjin “Belt and Road” Cultural Exchange Symposium, themed “Developing International Chinese Language Education to Promote Humanistic and Economic Prosperity along the Belt and Road,” was held in Wuxi on the same day. The symposium was organized by the Minjin Central Liaison Committee and brought together experts and scholars from the fields of culture and education for discussions and exchanges.
