Seoul’s Record-Breaking Heatwave: 33 Days of SleeplessNights

SEOUL, Aug. 23 (Yonhap) – South Korea experienced a “tropical night” with minimum temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius across most of the country on the nights of August 22-23, fueled by the southwest warm and humid air currents. Seoul and Jeju Island have now endured 33 and 39 consecutive tropical nights, respectively, with Seoul’s streak setting a new record since modern meteorological observations began in 1907.

According to Yonhap, Seoul has experienced continuous tropical nights since the night of August 21-22,adding to three previous nights, bringing the total number of tropical nights this year to 36. Jeju Island’s 39-day streak ties the second-longest record in its history, previously observed in 2016.

Weather forecasts predict that the scorching heat and tropical nights will continue for some time. Temperatures across the country are expected to reach 31-36 degrees Celsius on August 23, with continued tropical nights. Cities and coastal areas will experience sleepless nights until August 24-25.

In recent years, global warming has led to frequent extreme weather events, and South Korea has been deeply affected. This summer, temperatures have soared across the country, causing significant inconvenience to residents and impacting agricultural production.

Experts advise the public to take precautions against heatstroke, avoid prolonged outdoor activities, stay hydrated, consume lightmeals, and be vigilant about heatstroke symptoms. The government is also urged to strengthen warnings and response measures for high temperatures to ensure public safety.
