##Japanese Earthquake Fails to Dampen Korean Tourists’ Enthusiasm for Japan

**Keywords:** Japan travel, year-on-year growth, earthquake impact

**Seoul, August 23 (Yonhap)** – Despite the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan earlier this month, sparking concerns about a major earthquake, the number of Korean passengers on flights to Japan continues to increase year-on-year.

Data submitted to the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Committee by Incheon International Airport Corporation and Korea Airports Corporation shows that in the first 20 days of August, the number of passengers on flights to Japan (including both inbound and outbound passengers) at domestic airports reached 1.385 million, a 20.8% increase year-on-year and a 6.3% increase month-on-month.

Since the Japanese government resumed its visa-free entry policy in October 2022, the number of Korean passengers on flights to Japan has been steadily increasing. Even during the “major earthquake” warning period issued by the Japanese government (August 8-15), the number of passengers on flights to Japan from domestic airports reached 558,000, a 26.8% increase year-on-year. Additionally, during the Liberation Day holiday (August 15-18), the number of passengers on flights to Japan reached 269,000, a 21.4% increase compared to the Liberation Day holiday last year (August12-15, 221,000), unaffected by the cancellation of numerous flights due to Typhoon No. 7 “Ampil” this year.

Industry experts analyze that the continued weakening of the Japanese yen and the low prices of low-cost airline tickets are the main drivers of thesustained growth in demand for travel to Japan. It is expected that the travel boom to Japan will continue for some time.

It is noteworthy that while the Japanese earthquake has raised concerns among some, it has not significantly impacted Korean tourists’ desire to travel to Japan. This indicates that Korean tourists remain enthusiastic about traveling to Japan, and the Japanese tourism market remains vibrant.
