## South Korea’s Persistent Heatwave Leads to Surge in Heatstroke Cases, Livestock Industry Hit Hard

**SEOUL, Aug. 22 (Yonhap)** – South Korea is experiencing a prolonged heatwave, resulting in a sharp increase in heatstroke cases. According to data releasedby the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on Tuesday, the country recorded 2,994 heatstroke cases as of Aug. 20, with 28 deaths, marking a rise of 462 cases and2 deaths compared to the same period last year.

Data shows that on Aug. 20 alone, 98 heatstroke cases were reported, including two fatalities. Since May 20, the number of heatstroke patients hasbeen steadily climbing. From June 11 to Aug. 21, the extreme heat led to the deaths of 60,000 pigs and 943,000 poultry. Additionally, from July 30 to Aug. 21, 11.259million fish perished due to the high temperatures.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety predicts that temperatures will remain higher than usual in the short term, with the perceived temperature reaching 33 to 35 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country. The ministry urges citizens to take precautions against the heat, avoid outdooractivities during peak hours, and stay hydrated.

The ongoing heatwave poses a threat not only to public health but also to South Korea’s agriculture and livestock industries. The high temperatures have resulted in significant losses for these sectors due to the deaths of pigs, poultry, and fish.

The South Korean government has takenmeasures to address the heatwave, including issuing heatwave warnings, establishing cooling centers, and strengthening medical assistance. However, as the heatwave persists, the government needs to further intensify its response by implementing more effective measures to protect public health and minimize the losses caused by the extreme weather.
