##South Korea’s COVID-19 Surge Expected to Peak by Month’s End, High-Risk Groups Urged to Take Precautions

**Seoul**- Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) Director-General Jee Young-mee stated on August 21st that the current surge in COVID-19 cases is expected to peak by the end of the month and gradually decline thereafter. While acknowledging that the fatality rate of COVID-19 has droppedto levels comparable to seasonal influenza, she emphasized the need for focused protection of high-risk groups.

Jee noted that the COVID-19 fatality rate last year stood at 0.05%, similar to seasonal influenza. However, she stressed that elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses remain particularly vulnerable. The government will operate a joint task force with local governments to ensure that health centers are equipped to effectively manage patient care from the outset of the outbreak, ensuring timely and efficientmedical services for high-risk individuals.

Separately, the South Korean government announced on August 21st that it has been monitoring the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan for a year now, and no instances of exceeding nuclear radiation safety limits have been detected. Since the initial dischargeon August 24th, 2022, the government has conducted 49,633 nuclear radiation tests, all of which have shown no evidence of exceeding safety thresholds.

Meanwhile, Yoo Hye-mi, the chief secretary for low fertility response in the South Korean presidential office, stated onAugust 21st that attracting foreign workers could be a viable option to address the accelerating decline in the working population. She argued that the “Foreign Workers Employment Permit and Management System” could effectively address labor shortages in the short term. However, she stressed the need for long-term planning to explore effective strategies for attractingand utilizing foreign labor resources.

On August 21st, the South Korean prosecution announced the results of its investigation into allegations that First Lady Kim Keon-hee received luxury handbags. The investigation concluded that there was no criminal suspicion against Kim. Prosecutors determined that the handbags received from American pastor Choi Jae-youngin September 2022 were not related to Yoon’s presidential duties, thus exempting him from reporting obligations under anti-corruption laws.

As South Korea’s COVID-19 surge continues until the end of the month, the government will maintain its intensified efforts to control the outbreak, paying particular attentionto the health of high-risk groups. Concurrently, the South Korean government is actively addressing the labor shortage caused by an aging population and closely monitoring the impact of Japan’s discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
