News Title: “Japanese Firm Develops PFAS-Free Semiconductor New Material”

Keywords: Japan, Semiconductor, PFAS Alternative

News Content:
In the context of growing global demand for environmentally friendly products, Japanese semiconductor-related companies are actively researching and developing new materials that are free of harmful substances known as PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). PFAS are widely used in semiconductor manufacturing due to their thermal stability and other superior characteristics, but concerns over their health impacts have been increasing in recent years, prompting various regions around the globe to consider restrictions on their use.

TORAY Industries, a leading manufacturer of protective films in semiconductor manufacturing, successfully developed a new film last year that is free of PFAS, instead made from a polyester material that offers flexibility and strength. Koji Nakata, the Director of the Toray Film Research Institute, stated that the development of the new material aims to produce products with a low environmental footprint, meeting market demands.

Additionally, DIC Corporation has made progress in the development of new materials for semiconductor silicon wafer surfactants, introducing an alternative that is free of PFAS. Other Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi Chemical and Mitsui Chemicals are also actively researching the application of materials used for other purposes in the semiconductor sector to adapt to the industry’s development needs.

These efforts not only help reduce reliance on PFAS but also promote the sustainable development of the semiconductor industry, as well as enhance the competitiveness of Japanese companies in the international market. As global awareness of environmental protection grows, this trend of research and development is expected to continue and expand, driving the entire semiconductor industry towards a more environmentally friendly and healthy direction.
