Beijing, August 19th (Xinhua News Agency) – The Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MTAC) reported on the 19th that according to statistics from the Malaysian Immigration Department and the Tourism Promotion Board, Chinese tourists entering Malaysia reached nearly 1.45 million people in the first half of this year, a 1.9 times increase from the previous year. Chinese tourists accounted for 12.3% of Malaysia’s international visitor arrivals in the first half of the year, making China the third largest source of tourists to Malaysia.
The statistics also show that in June this year, Chinese tourists entering Malaysia reached nearly 265,000 people, a 15.9% increase month-on-month, and a 19.2% increase from the same period in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yeo Jiawei, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture of Malaysia, pointed out that in the first half of this year, international tourists visiting Malaysia increased by 28.9% compared to the same period last year, with an increase of about 2.65 million people. Chinese tourists not only saw a growth rate far higher than the overall international tourist growth rate, but also accounted for 35.9% of the total increase in international tourist arrivals, making China the largest contributor to the increase in tourist arrivals in Malaysia.
Officials from the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture believe that the mutual visa exemption between China and Malaysia is a significant factor in the rapid growth of Chinese tourists. On the other hand, the ministry attaches great importance to the Chinese market and has actively marketed and promoted Malaysia tourism. Minister Yeo Jiawei has visited China four times since last year to promote Malaysia tourism, which has successfully attracted the attention of Chinese tourists.
Officials from the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture introduced that in the second half of this year, the weekly passenger load of direct flights from China to Malaysia will exceed 100,000 people, and the archaeological site of the Niassa National Park Cave Complex in the Sarawak state of Malaysia was recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, adding a new highlight to the country’s tourism. It is expected that there will be further growth in Chinese tourists visiting Malaysia in the second half of the year.
This trend indicates that as the international tourism market gradually recovers, Malaysia’s focus on the Chinese market and proactive promotion strategies are yielding significant results, and also bring new opportunities for the cooperation and development of the tourism industries of both countries.
