News Content: Li Yuying, the former vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for bribery at his first trial.
BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Li Yuying, the former vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association, was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 1 million yuan ($147,000) for bribery at his first trial. His illegally obtained assets were confiscated and handed over to the state treasury.
According to public records, Li was born in October 1954 in Zhejiang Province. In April 2023, he was officially reported to have been suspected of serious violations of law and was investigated by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission, the sports bureau’s disciplinary group, and the Hubei Provincial Supervisory Commission.
On March 29, 2023, the first trial of Li Yuying’s bribery case was held in public. The Hubei Provincial People’s Procuratorate accused Li of using his positions as the party secretary and mayor of Jinshan District, Shanghai, vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association, and chairman of the Chinese Super League Company, as well as his influence, to provide assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as football club league survival and bidding for engineering projects. In exchange, he illegally received money and property worth 12.01 million yuan. Li Yuying pleaded guilty in court.
During his tenure, Li publicly set many goals, including aiming to turn various levels of leagues into top-tier Asian leagues and for the Chinese Super League to continuously move towards becoming the world’s sixth largest league. He also focused on youth football and introduced the policy for players aged 23 and under in the Chinese Super League, which caused considerable controversy. In 2019, after the Chinese Football Association completed its leadership transition, Li gradually faded from public view and was rarely seen until his official downfall.
This sentence reflects China’s zero-tolerance attitude towards corruption and reminds public officials to uphold integrity, act fairly, and serve the interests of the country and society. It also provides a clear legal direction for the healthy development of the football industry, helping to clean up the football environment and promote fair competition in football.
