Title: “North Korea Files Solo Application to Inscribe Taekwondo on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List”

Keywords: Taekwondo, Intangible Cultural Heritage, North Korea

Content: North Korea has filed a solo application to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to include Taekwondo on the list of intangible cultural heritage, according to an official announcement on the UNESCO website and other sources. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) submitted an application to UNESCO’s headquarters in March this year to inscribe its traditional martial art, Taekwondo, on the intangible cultural heritage list.

On the same day, the head of the Taekwondo UNESCO Promotion Team in South Korea, Choi Jae-bong, confirmed the news during a telephone interview. He mentioned that while the South and North Korea had previously agreed to jointly promote Taekwondo for inscription on the UNESCO list, similar to their joint effort for traditional wrestling, the North has decided to file a solo application this time.

Under the rules, countries interested in inscribing their intangible cultural heritage must submit their applications by the end of March each year. The Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is part of UNESCO, will consider various factors such as the significance, value, and preservation status of the heritage in question before finalizing the list of inscriptions.

It is reported that South Korea submitted an application in March this year to inscribe “the traditional knowledge and techniques of Hanji paper-making and its cultural practices” on the UNESCO list, but Taekwondo was not included among the proposed projects.

As of now, North Korea has four items listed under the intangible cultural heritage, including Arirang folk song (2013), Kimchi culture (2014), traditional wrestling (2018, inscribed jointly with South Korea), and Paju cold noodles culture (2022). Previously, South and North Korea filed separate applications for traditional wrestling, but later they successfully applied for inscription jointly through diplomatic efforts.

Furthermore, it is noted that the outcome of the Taekwondo inscription will be announced in 2026. (End)
