News Title: “China’s Bismuth Export Controls Have Limited Impact on South Korea”

Keywords: Bismuth Controls, South Korea Impact, Limited

News Content:
The Chinese government recently announced plans to impose export controls on bismuth and other items, a move that has drawn widespread attention from the international community. The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy stated that it expects the impact of China’s export control measures on the relevant industries in South Korea to be limited.

Bismuth is an important industrial material used primarily in the production of lead-acid batteries and flame retardants. South Korea imported bismuth worth $59.2 million from China last year, accounting for about 74% of its total imports. However, the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy believes that due to the diversification of South Korea’s domestic supply chain for bismuth imports and the availability of alternative materials, the impact of China’s control measures on South Korea will be limited. Additionally, bismuth contained in by-products from South Korea’s zinc smelting operations can also partially supplement domestic demand.

The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy also stated that it will strengthen regulatory measures and maintain close cooperation with China to ensure that the supply of bismuth is not affected. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced a day earlier that China has decided to impose export controls on bismuth and related items starting from the 15th of next month, with the aim of safeguarding national security and interests and fulfilling international obligations in non-proliferation.

Although the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy is optimistic about the impact of China’s export controls, industry players are still advised to closely monitor the situation and prepare contingency plans to address potential risks such as supply chain disruptions.
