Title: “Taiwan Students Experience the Culture of the Civil Service Examination in Fuzhou”
Keywords: Taiwan students, path of the civil service examination, simulation of the county examination
Content: On August 13, 2024, Fuzhou, China – Taiwan students gathered together to participate in a special study camp activity, retracing the path of the civil service examination. The aim of this event was to allow Taiwan students to experience the culture and traditions of ancient China firsthand by simulating ancient civil service examination exams.
On the day of the event, Taiwan students dressed in Hanfu and observed ancient etiquette, showing their respect and reverence for traditional culture. They then participated in an interactive experience called “Wandering the Civil Service Examination Path” using virtual reality technology, which seemed to transport them back to the era of ancient civil service examinations.
The highlight of the event was the simulation of the “county examination” segment. Taiwan students held ancient-style answer sheets and used traditional calligraphy brushes to answer questions, experiencing the atmosphere of ancient scholars taking the civil service examination. This segment not only allowed them to feel the seriousness and sanctity of ancient civil service examinations but also deepened their understanding of China’s historical and cultural heritage.
Lee Yi-chen, a 20-year-old Taiwanese youth, said, “The answer sheets were made of cloth, and the pens were very similar to calligraphy brushes, which made it quite ceremonial.” Another Taiwanese student from Keelung, Zhou Zhi-yu, commented, “Being able to follow in the footsteps of ancient scholars on the path of the civil service examination, revisit the knowledge of ancient civil service examination culture, meet different people, and see different landscapes, is a very rare experience.”
It is reported that the study camp will last for 11 days, during which Taiwan students will visit Fujian, Beijing, and Henan provinces, deeply experiencing the culture and history of ancient China. Since 2018, this activity has attracted nearly 300 Taiwan youth students to participate, becoming an important bridge for cross-strait cultural exchanges.
At the opening ceremony, young people from both sides of the strait watched a documentary on the Taiwan students’ study camp retracing the path of the civil service examination, reviewing the past few years, mourning the ancestors, and seeking roots, deepening the cultural identity and emotional exchanges between young people from both sides of the strait.
This event not only provides Taiwan students with a platform to understand and experience the culture of the ancient civil service examination in China but also injects new vitality into cross-strait cultural exchanges, promoting mutual understanding and friendship between young people from both sides of the strait.
