Title: Xi Jinping Emphasizes on Continuously Strengthening Work on the Protection, Inheritance, and Utilization of Cultural and Natural Heritage

Recently, General Secretary Xi Jinping issued an important instruction on strengthening the work of protecting, inheriting, and utilizing cultural and natural heritage, emphasizing the need to continuously enhance the transmission, utilization, and revitalization of cultural and natural heritage in the new era to better meet the people’s needs for a better life.

The General Secretary has always been deeply concerned about the most precious things left by the Chinese civilization through the vicissitudes of life. He instructed: “Our culture is continuous, and these treasures left behind must be protected and cherished with all means.”

The Longshun Ancient City Site is a holy place for demonstrating the history of Chinese civilization over 5,000 years, a rare precious wealth. In July 2003, when Xi Jinping was the Secretary-General of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, he came to the Longshun Ancient City Site for investigation. Faced with the serious destruction of the site’s ecological environment by open-pit mining, he firmly demanded the protection of the Longshun Ancient City Site. Soon, this holy place returned to peace from the “roar of cannons,” the green hills were restored, and the site was reborn. In 2019, the Longshun Ancient City Site was successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List, receiving wide recognition from the international community.

The Sanxingdui Site represents the ancient civilization of Shu in the thousands of years ago and its development level, the largest and most culturally rich city site in the Yangtze River Basin of the same period. In July 2023, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the new museum of the Sanxingdui Site, learning about the excavation history and the achievements of the ancient Shu civilization. At the Sanxingdui Museum’s Conservation and Restoration Pavilion, the General Secretary communicated with Gu Hanzhong, a “Great Craftsman” who has been engaged in the restoration of cultural relics for nearly 40 years, expressing his appreciation for their work and emphasizing the need to carry forward the spirit of meticulous work, doing things slowly and steadily, and making progress day by day.

The General Secretary pointed out: “The excellent traditional culture of China has become the genetic code of the Chinese nation, rooted in the hearts of the Chinese people and subtly influencing their way of thinking and behavior.” The preservation of cultural treasures is repeatedly emphasized by the General Secretary.

The civilization of China has never been interrupted, becoming the spiritual sustenance for the Chinese nation’s endless life. The General Secretary’s important instructions provide a fundamental guide for the protection and inheritance of China’s excellent traditional culture and clarify the direction for promoting the work of protecting and utilizing cultural and natural heritage. We will continue to strive to ensure that these precious historical and cultural heritage are properly protected and utilized, leaving a valuable legacy for future generations.
