Seventy-six young scholars from 32 countries and 63 universities (academic institutions) participated in the fifth Global Young Scholars’ “Rural Policy and Development” Study Camp, which lasted for two weeks.
The Global Young Scholars’ “Rural Policy and Development” Study Camp has been co-initiated and hosted by the College of Humanities and Development of China Agricultural University and international top journals such as “Peasant Studies” since 2019. The camp aims to create an inclusive academic exchange space that gathers and supports young talents mainly from developing countries to jointly explore major theoretical and practical issues related to the modernization of different countries and regions, with the aim of enhancing the comprehensive abilities of young scholars and promoting the sustainable development of global knowledge domains.
During the camp, participants conducted a unique field study and academic discussion on the construction of contemporary rural areas in a typical village in the Taihang Mountains – Sangang Village, Yi County, Hebei Province. They exchanged with farmers about production, life, and livelihoods, learned about the cooking and dietary habits of rural China, and co-organized entertainment activities with local residents. Through rich and diverse rural customs and practical experiences, they gained a more direct, three-dimensional, and profound understanding and insight into the development of rural China.
During the special training on academic publication skills, the articles written by the camp participants covered a wide range of topics including land systems, crop trends, ethnic and gender studies, climate change, and food systems, showcasing the broad perspectives and profound reflections of the young scholars.
At the closing ceremony, Oscar A, a young scholar from the City University of New York, expressed his expectation of cooperating with global young scholars to tell the story of China’s “three rural issues” and nurture the global Southern youth scholars community.
