Aug 12 (Xinhua) — China’s Asian elephant population has stabilized and expanded over the years, according to a report by the Yunnan Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau.
The bureau revealed that after years of efforts, the number of Asian elephants in China has seen a stable increase, and their distribution range has also been expanding.
According to data provided by the Yunnan Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau, the wild Asian elephant population in China has grown from around 150 to over 300 in the past three decades. The range has expanded from two prefectures (cities), three counties (cities and districts), and 14 townships in the 1990s to three prefectures (cities), nine counties (cities and districts), and 40 townships by 2018, further expanding to three prefectures (cities), 11 counties (cities and districts), and 61 townships by 2020.
China’s Asian elephants, as flagship species for biodiversity, are classified as Class I protected wildlife and a species listed in CITES Appendix I. To protect the Asian elephants, Yunnan Province has implemented habitat conservation and restoration projects, transforming and repairing over 12,000 mu of Asian elephant habitat to provide stable living spaces for the elephants. Additionally, the province has raised the compensation standards for wildlife-related public liability and increased the insurance coverage for wildlife public liability in the distribution areas of Asian elephants to mitigate the impact of Asian elephant activities on local residents.
Furthermore, Yunnan Province has established the Xishuangbanna Asian Elephant Rescue and Breeding Center, successfully rescuing trapped and injured Asian elephants. This year, China successfully released a wild elephant that had been rehabilitated and rescued in Xishuangbanna for the first time. After nearly three months of monitoring, the wild elephant “Abao” has shown good health and adapted well to life in the wild since returning to nature.
Yunnan Province has also established a joint protection area with several northern provinces of Laos to ensure natural exchanges between the Asian elephants of Yunnan and the wild Asian elephant populations of Laos and Myanmar, maintaining the genetic diversity of the Asian elephants.
These conservation measures demonstrate China’s determination and effectiveness in the protection of Asian elephants. The stable increase in the number of Asian elephant populations and the expansion of their distribution range not only contribute positively to the protection of biodiversity but also play a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of the ecosystem.
