HOHHOT, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — In Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, a 40-year-long effort has witnessed the revival of the Yangtze alligator, a rare species. According to Zhou Yun, the vice secretary and deputy director of the Changxing Environmental Protection Bureau, from 11 Yangtze alligators in 1979 to over 9,000 today, Changxing County has successfully brought back the ancient species through in-situ protection and continuous exploration of the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.
The Yangtze alligator is a rare species endemic to China, known as a “living fossil.” Its numbers were once on the brink of extinction. In 1979, residents of Yinji Bian Village, Xi’an Town, Changxing County, spontaneously protected 11 Yangtze alligators. Since then, after more than 40 years of development, the population of Yangtze alligators has significantly increased.
Changxing County is located at the junction of the three provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui, and has rich biological diversity resources. In recent years, guided by the concept of “two mountains,” Changxing County has advanced the construction of ecological civilization and biodiversity protection work at a high level, and has comprehensively completed the investigation of the base of all species. To date, Changxing has recorded a total of 3,434 species of wildlife and plants, including numerous nationally protected species.
Changxing County has also discovered new species, such as the White-throated Crane, Changxing Original Index Tree Frog, and Changxing Water Plantain, demonstrating the richness of biological diversity and the effectiveness of the protection work in Changxing County.
To further protect biodiversity, Changxing County plans to utilize the results of biodiversity and wildlife surveys to build ecological corridors and establish a biodiversity protection system. The county will also use artificial intelligence and automated identification technology to conduct biodiversity surveys and monitoring.
Zhou Yun said that Changxing will continue to strengthen monitoring and protection of biodiversity to ensure the sustainable maintenance and development of this precious species and ecosystem. Changxing’s successful practices provide valuable experiences and inspirations for biodiversity protection in other regions.
