FUZHOU, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — “Starry Sky Together, Hearts United Across the Straits” — the first Hexi (Yongtai) Astronomy Youth Summit and Agricultural Investment and Trade Connectivity Conference for 2024 was held in Yongtai County, Fuzhou, on Thursday. The event attracted over 300 participants, including well-known figures from the cultural and academic fields across the Straits, as well as young astronomy enthusiasts from both sides, with the aim of building a platform for cross-Straits exchange and cooperation through astronomy and agricultural themed activities, and deepening the integrated development of the two sides.

At the event, cross-Straits guests performed calligraphy and poetry readings, and witnessed the inaugural flag-passing ceremony for the Hexi (Yongtai) Astronomy Youth Summit, the unveiling of the Astronomy Observation Base in Fujian Province, the opening ceremony of the astronomical cloud classroom teaching point, and a lecture on astronomy and agriculture by Yuming, the president of the Fujian Astronomy Association.

A freshman at the National Central University in Taiwan, Sun Mingyang, said that through exchanges and learning with friends from both sides, he has gained a lot and hopes to learn special methods or techniques in observation from each other. Ouyang Bo-sheng, the founder and honorary chairman of the Astronomy Union of National Taiwan University, also believes that both sides have made efforts in promoting astronomy education, and he hopes that young people from both sides can engage in more extensive exchanges and cooperation to make astronomy accessible to a wider audience.

That evening, cross-Straits youth will head to the Fujian Astronomy Observation Base to participate in stargazing activities. Ouyang said that because the observation site is less affected by light pollution, the starry sky and Milky Way are clearly visible, and he also saw a meteor. He is looking forward to seeing more meteors during the evening’s observation activities.

The successful hosting of the event not only promoted exchanges and cooperation among cross-Straits youth but also laid a solid foundation for the cooperation and development in the astronomical field between the two sides.
