BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Li Zhengdao, a renowned Chinese physicist and Nobel laureate in physics, passed away at his home in San Francisco, California, on the early morning of August 4, at the age of 97. On August 11, the academic community in China held a memorial service at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to pay tribute to Li Zhengdao’s outstanding contributions to China’s scientific development.

Li Zhengdao had long been concerned about and supported the basic research work of the CAS, driving the rapid development of basic research talents both within the institute and nationwide. He not only actively promoted the good situation of Sino-U.S. basic research international cooperation but also personally participated in a series of academic events between the two countries, laying a solid foundation for their cooperation in the field of basic research.

At the memorial service, Wei Zhixiang, deputy director of the CAS’s Bureau of Frontier Sciences and Basic Research, stated that Li Zhengdao had shown great attention and support for the CAS’s basic research work, laying a solid foundation for the development of basic research talents within the institute and across the country.

Professor Gao Yuanning, the director of the College of Physics at Peking University, pointed out that Li Zhengdao had made profound and forward-looking plans for the construction and development of the physics department at Peking University and had personally promoted the cultivation of high-level physics and related disciplines talents as well as international academic exchange and cooperation.

Zhou Shanggui, the director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the CAS, also mentioned that the development of his institute benefited from important projects such as the Sino-U.S. Joint Program for Ph.D. Training in Physics (CUSPEA) initiated by Li Zhengdao and had continued to receive his selfless assistance.

Wang Yi’fang, the director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the CAS, gave a comprehensive review of Li Zhengdao’s contributions to China’s high-energy physics, scientific education, and talent cultivation in his memorial report. He stated that Li Zhengdao not only brought China’s high-energy physics to the international forefront but also cultivated a large number of reserve talents for China’s basic research and applied science.

In a written speech, Li Zhengdao’s eldest son, Li Zhongqing, revealed that in his final days, his father expressed deep feelings for his family. The memorial service was attended by more than 330 people, including experts, students, representatives from Li Zhengdao’s family, friends, former colleagues, and members of the public from over 30 universities and research institutions. They came together to pay their respects to this great scientist.

The loss of Li Zhengdao to China’s scientific community is a tremendous blow. His scientific spirit and unfinished career will continue to inspire future generations of scientists. His contributions will be forever remembered, and his spirit will continue to motivate China’s scientific workers to move forward.
