BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — An abandoned mine in Longyan City’s Yongding District, Longtan Town, has been transformed into a “flower and fruit mountain” through green development, showcasing the town’s ecological transformation.
Once known as a coal-dominated mining town, Longtan has seen a rebirth. The “black coal mountain” has been transformed into a “flower and fruit mountain,” with the former mining area now becoming a vibrant base for butterfly orchids.
Longtan was once a significant coal production base in the region. However, with the depletion of resources and the rise in environmental protection awareness, numerous small coal mines and cement factories closed around 2012, leaving the area facing issues of a single industrial structure and unemployment among the local population. To embark on a path of transformation and development, Longtan began to vigorously clean up and restore abandoned mines.
After analyzing the topography and ecological conditions of the mines, Longtan implemented a series of measures to restore the environment. The abandoned mine lands were turned into valuable resources, laying the groundwork for the transformation of the local mining industry and attracting companies like the Wanhu Garden Company to establish butterfly orchid industries.
The intelligent greenhouses of Wanhu Garden Company cover an area of 46,000 square meters, producing 10 million butterfly orchid seedlings annually, which are sold both domestically and internationally. The booming butterfly orchid industry not only stimulates local employment and increases the per capita income of the villagers but also drives the development of related industries such as courier services, flower pots, and packaging.
In addition, leveraging its pristine environment and butterfly orchid industry, Longtan has developed a tourism sector. The improvement of the environment and the flourishing industry have attracted villagers working abroad to return to their hometowns to seek employment and entrepreneurship, contributing to the local economic and social development.
The green “ecological transformation” of Longtan is a microcosm of Fujian’s high-quality development. Through ecological restoration and industry transformation, the abandoned mine area has achieved a win-win situation in economic and ecological benefits, offering valuable lessons for other regions.
