CAIRO, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — “I believe that Ningxia wines have reached world-class standards, and we have seen them being recognized in restaurants around the globe,” said John Bakker, the director-general of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), in an interview in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
He added that as Ningxia and China continue to establish their brand status in the global wine market, the trend of increasing recognition will continue.
On August 10, John Bakker, the director-general of the OIV, was interviewed by media in Yinchuan. Photo provided by He Xinyi.
From August 9 to 11, the Fourth China (Ningxia) International Wine, Tourism and Culture Expo was held in Ningxia, where John Bakker was invited to attend and inspect the Ningxia Hexi wine region in the eastern slope of the Helan Mountains.
China is the third largest country in grape cultivation area, the eighth largest in wine consumption, and the largest producer of fresh grapes in the world. John Bakker revealed that China is expected to become the 51st member of the OIV in November this year.
John Bakker said that the Ningxia Hexi wine region is an important part of China’s wine revival. “Although the Ningxia Hexi wine region has recently emerged, its development momentum is very astonishing, and it has won widespread attention and praise from the international community. At numerous international wine competitions and exhibitions, Ningxia wines have excelled in quality and won numerous awards, further solidifying the status of the Helan Mountains wine region as a world-class wine producing area.”
“This is my first visit to Ningxia, where there are suitable soil and climatic conditions for wine grape cultivation,” John Bakker said. “The unique natural conditions have created a unique style for Ningxia wines.” He noted that local wine producers in Ningxia have been exploring the concept of ‘terroir,’ which is technically strong yet poetic, integrating aspects such as climate, land, grapes, and people. The industry in Ningxia is dedicated to a deep understanding of the unique ‘terroir’ of the region, producing wines that are ‘distinctively Chinese.’
John Bakker said during his visit to Ningxia, he learned about the sustainable development measures taken by the local wine industry, such as large-scale afforestation, plantation, and technological transformation. “The development of the wine industry has also provided employment opportunities and promoted economic growth for the local area,” John Bakker said.
John Bakker suggested that the Ningxia Hexi wine region should continue to strengthen its research and insights into consumers, introducing products that better match consumer preferences. He also emphasized the importance of marketing innovation to enhance brand recognition and further strengthen consumer recognition of Ningxia wines. (完)
