A captivating video on the personal media account of Guangxi’s young Heptang Qin preserver Tang Jiaxia has caught the attention of many netizens. In the video, she performs popular music pieces such as “My Altai” and “Autumn Leaves” on the Heptang Qin, showcasing a perfect fusion of traditional Chinese music with modern pop culture.

The Heptang Qin is a traditional musical art form of China’s sole maritime ethnic group, the Jing people, known for its unique technique of “one string for a hundred sounds,” making it an indispensable art form in the daily life of the Jing people. Tang Jiaxia has been learning the Heptang Qin since childhood and has a 13-year career in the art of the qin. She not only promotes the Heptang Qin in schools but also performs on the streets of famous scenic spots like the Yellow Crane Tower, attracting the attention of many young people by playing pop music on traditional instruments.

To attract the interest of more young people, Tang Jiaxia has experimented with blending the Heptang Qin with pop music, attracting a large number of fans through live streams on social media platforms. She has also collaborated with other young preservers, integrating Jing Heptang Qin art with intangible cultural heritage projects such as Hubei Xiaqu, innovating the performance forms of traditional Chinese folk music.

Zhao Xia, a national intangible cultural heritage project for Jing Heptang Qin art and a provincial intangible cultural heritage preserver, noted that the Heptang Qin art preservation work began in 2007. Through measures such as resource surveys, campus training base construction, and public welfare training, a group of representative preservers have been cultivated, with Tang Jiaxia being one of them. Zhao Xia and Tang Jiaxia, who are both teachers and friends, have jointly explored the Heptang Qin technique and have performed in domestic and international venues to spread Jing culture.

The Heptang Qin not only has a profound cultural background in China but also is widely spread in countries such as Vietnam in Southeast Asia. In Dongning, Guangxi, the Heptang Qin is a frequent guest in cross-border folk art exchange activities. Zhao Xia believes that the Heptang Qin art’s ability to spread around the world is inseparable from the efforts and innovations of generations of Heptang Qin artists, as well as their continuous efforts to improve the form and quality of the sound.

The joint efforts of Tang Jiaxia and Zhao Xia not only ensure the inheritance and development of the Heptang Qin art but also make positive contributions to the promotion and innovation of traditional Chinese folk music. Their stories inspire more young people to pay attention to and participate in the protection and inheritance of traditional culture.
