HAIKOU, July 31 (Xinhua) — Zhong Zheng, a student from Haikou High School, recently won a gold medal and secured first place at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), breaking the “zero” barrier for Hainan Province in the five major international academic Olympiads. Upon his arrival back in Haikou on July 31 after the competition, Zhong Zheng expressed that his success was the result of accumulation and that he enjoyed the process of the competition.

On July 31, Zhong Zheng was photographed in Haikou to commemorate his gold medal and first-place finish at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Photographed by Chen Yingqing.

Zhong Zheng is praised for his diligence, love of thinking, and ability to reflect by Zhao Zhonghua, the assistant principal and head coach of the chemistry Olympiad team at Haikou High School. Zhao Zhonghua introduced that Zhong Zheng had unique plans at different stages of his studies and was quick to reflect after completing them, which greatly benefited his learning. When studying a particular knowledge point, he could learn from different perspectives and was willing to share with his classmates.

At 18 years old, Zhong Zheng spoke about why he enjoys chemistry, saying that conducting chemical experiments always leads him to “discover new lands.” There are many phenomena in the experimental process that differ from the expected results, which he finds very interesting and attractive.

“It’s a very joyful process from preparing for the competition to actually competing. Going to participate is a way of exchanging learning and spending the holiday on a journey.” Zhong Zheng said that during his competition in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, he sang, exercised, and played table tennis with students from all over the world, “I rarely lose at table tennis, so it’s not as tense as one might imagine.”

“I have a rather optimistic personality.” Zhong Zheng said that on the competition field, he faced setbacks and became anxious when faced with difficult questions, “When I encounter difficulties, I let myself calm down, adjust my state, and then think again, just like doing experiments. I break through a point locally and then extend it to the whole picture to solve the problem. After solving the problem, I feel a sense of accomplishment.”

In the eyes of Zhong Zheng’s father, Zhong Fuhua, his son is not the genius that others might say he is. His good grades are due to the encouragement of his teachers, his own liking, and the effort he has invested more than others.

Zhong Zheng said that his parents have a very good way of educating him, and they do not bring him pressure. During his spare time, they do not interfere with his daily life, nor do they sign him up for many tutoring classes, “This allowed me to spend my childhood happily.”

Zhong Zheng has already received a university admission notice from Peking University and looks forward to university life, hoping to participate in research projects and experiments at an early stage and to become a scientist in the future, making contributions to scientific research.

It is reported that the International Chemistry Olympiad is usually held in July and lasts for about 10 days. This year’s competition attracted 327 participants from 96 countries and regions around the world. (Finished)
