Title: China’s Framework for the Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine Nearly Completed to Promote Internationalization

Recently, Zhu Gui, the director of the Policy and Regulation Department at the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, made a statement in Beijing that significant progress has been made in the standardization of traditional Chinese medicine in China, and a basic framework suitable for the development of traditional Chinese medicine has been established. This framework consists mainly of national standards for traditional Chinese medicine, industry standards, local standards, group standards, and international standards for traditional Chinese medicine, covering a wide range of fields including traditional Chinese medicine health services and minority medicine.

According to Zhu Gui, China has formulated 77 recommended national standards for traditional Chinese medicine, 12 guidance technical documents, 10 industry standards for traditional Chinese medicine, more than 1,000 local standards for traditional Chinese medicine, and more than 2,500 group standards for traditional Chinese medicine. Under the push of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Technical Committee of the International Standards Organization, 112 international standards for traditional Chinese medicine have been released, indicating that China’s traditional Chinese medicine standards are gradually moving towards the international stage.

To further promote the standardization of traditional Chinese medicine, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine has recently issued the “Action Plan for the Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2024-2026).” According to the Action Plan, by the end of 2026, China will establish a standard system that meets the needs of high-quality development of traditional Chinese medicine, and complete the formulation of 180 domestic standards for traditional Chinese medicine and 30 international standards for traditional Chinese medicine.

The Action Plan also outlines six key tasks, including enhancing the supply of standards for traditional Chinese medicine in key areas and promoting the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine standards. In enhancing the supply of standards for traditional Chinese medicine in key areas, a series of guidelines for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of traditional Chinese medicine and a perfect system for minority medicine standards will be developed and revised. In promoting the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine standards, China will establish a mechanism guided by the government and participated by the industry to push traditional Chinese medicine standards “outward,” promoting the international development of traditional Chinese medicine products, technology, and services.

The implementation of these measures not only helps to improve the quality of traditional Chinese medicine services but also promotes its application and recognition worldwide, and pushes the dissemination and exchange of traditional Chinese medicine culture. With the continuous improvement of traditional Chinese medicine standards and the enhancement of its international influence, traditional Chinese medicine will make a greater contribution to global health.
