The Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress recently held a meeting to hear a report on the inspection of the implementation of the Regulations on the Protection and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangdong Province and the implementation of the Regulations on the Protection and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the People’s Republic of China. The report shows that over the past seven years, Guangdong Province has cumulatively invested 3.585 billion yuan to support the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This measure has effectively promoted the construction and improvement of the TCM service network in Guangdong Province.
As of the release of the report, Guangdong Province has 24,000 TCM medical institutions, including 215 TCM hospitals and 1854 TCM clinics (TCM museums) in grassroots health care institutions. Guangdong has achieved full coverage of TCM hospitals at the municipal level and above, and TCM hospitals at the secondary level have also been established in counties with a population of over 300,000, forming an integrated TCM service network with provincial TCM hospitals as the backbone, municipal hospitals as the hub, county hospitals as the foundation, and grassroots institutions as the base.

The report also suggests that Guangdong should accelerate the establishment of major national TCM research and development bases, logistics bases, financing platforms, and trading platforms in the Greater Bay Area of Hong Kong, Macao, and Guangdong, and vigorously build a platform for TCM exchanges in the Greater Bay Area. At the same time, Guangdong should also speed up the pace of internationalization of TCM development, incorporate the safety standards of Chinese medicines into the construction of international standards for Chinese medicines, and promote the integration and formulation of international clinical trials of TCM and international standards for medicinal materials.
