Following a summer rain, the Lhasa South Mountain Park feels particularly fresh and inviting. Walking along the park’s paths, one is transported to a tranquil green world far from the bustle of the city. In the quiet moments, the sound of bird calls can be heard, and when one looks up towards the summit, the words “Long Live the Fatherland” shine brightly. Raindrops slide down the young green leaves and land softly on the moist soil, producing a melodious sound, as if nature itself is celebrating the success of the Lhasa North and South Mountain Greening Project.
Lhasa South Mountain Park is a significant achievement of the Lhasa North and South Mountain Greening Project, which is a microcosm of Tibet’s deep commitment to Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thinking and its efforts to create a national ecological civilization highland. The Lhasa North and South Mountain Greening Project is the first major ecological restoration project for large-scale afforestation in Tibet, and it is also an important public welfare project aimed at improving the ecological well-being of people of all ethnic groups. The project covers 9 counties and districts, including Chengguan District, Derge County, Daqi District, Lvdun New Area, Qushui County, Mozhuongkang County, Linzhou County, as well as Langka County and Gongga County in Shannan Prefecture, totaling 206.72 million mu of land to be绿化 over a decade, aiming to “green the mountains in five years and the entire Lhasa in ten years.”
Since its launch, the project has been progressing at an unprecedented speed and scale. Once barren mountains are now lush and verdant, and the “green base” is continuously thickening. Recently, the park’s forester, Tashi Kyupai, shared his insights into the changes brought about by this great endeavor.
“Trees on this mountain, they’re what we’ve planted one by one,” Tashi Kyupai, responsible for the park’s water and electricity maintenance and forestry work, proudly explains. He recounts how they’ve been busy since the planting season began, using a variety of methods including drones, mules, and manual labor to ensure each tree thrives. Different planting and maintenance strategies are employed depending on the altitude and terrain. On flat areas, a combination of machinery and human labor is used, while steep slopes rely on mules for transportation of saplings and fertilizers. They also regularly pick up litter to keep the environment clean for the plants to grow better.
Tashi Kyupai’s words encapsulate his unwavering commitment over eight years. From a single sapling to a forest, the people living in this land are steadfast in their efforts to plant and green. They plant not just trees, but also hope, and they are the guardians, witnesses, and beneficiaries of the ecological dividends. The Lhasa North and South Mountain Greening Project not only beautifies the urban environment but also creates job opportunities for local residents. Since the project’s inception, it has facilitated employment and income growth for over 5.5 million people, amounting to 19.3 billion yuan, striving for a win-win situation between ecological preservation and economic growth.
Discussing future plans, the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Lhasa Forestry and Grassland Bureau stated that the city will continue to increase efforts in ecological restoration, strengthen ecological protection and restoration, and enhance urban greening levels, ensuring that green remains the most prominent color in Lhasa’s landscape. Efforts will be made to expand green spaces, elevate the city’s quality, and achieve harmony between humans and nature, contributing to the construction of a beautiful Tibet and a green Tibet.
