### Japanese Youth Visit Guangxi: Blooming Friendship, Brief Yet Beautiful

On July 27 in Nanning, Guangxi, a significant event for Sino-Japanese cultural exchange was held. During the ceremony for the 2024 Japan友City Youth Visit to Guangxi Exchange Camp, Miki Shima, a student from Kumamoto Prefecture, expressed her heartfelt experience of her first trip abroad: “This is my first time stepping out of Japan, and I’m very glad to have come to Guangxi, China for the first time. The warmth of Guangxi people and the stunning natural scenery here have made these few days memorable and fleeting. I wish the enduring friendship between Japan and China will continue.”

This exchange program marks the first visit of Japanese youth to Guangxi after the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between youth from Guangxi and their Japanese友City counterparts. Since October 1, 1979, when Guilin City established友City relations with Kumamoto City, it was the first友City relationship between Guangxi and Japan. In May 20, 1982, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Kumamoto Prefecture signed an agreement for friendly relations, opening a new chapter of cooperation and exchange.

Over the past few days, the Japanese youth delegation has not only explored the natural beauty of Guilin and Liuzhou, savored Guilin rice noodles and Liuzhou loushisuan, experienced Chinese martial arts, but also forged deep friendships with Guangxi locals. They engaged in activities like building model airplanes, making lacquer fans, pounding sticky rice, and wrapping dumplings, even had a close encounter with the giant panda “Miyabiko” born and raised in Japan, experiencing the local culture and charm of Guangxi.

Miki Shima’s remarks, beyond her personal feelings, conveyed the shared aspirations of Japanese and Chinese youth: to deepen understanding through exchanges, foster friendship, and contribute to the bright future of Sino-Japan relations. Koga Ryo, a counselor from the International Policy Section of Kumamoto Prefectural Tourism, noted that the majority of the Japanese youth participating in this trip were making their first visit to China, finding the journey both novel and interesting, believing it to be a valuable life experience for them.

This visit to Guangxi not only provided Japanese youth with an unforgettable cultural experience but also further strengthened the friendship between the two countries’ younger generations. Just as Miki Shima wished, the enduring Sino-Japan friendship, like this brief yet beautiful journey, will be cherished in their hearts, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation and exchange.
