News Content: Direct hit of a strong typhoon “Geme”: Zhejiang Wenzhou experiences intermittent rain and growing winds
Wenzhou, Zhejiang, July 25 (Xinhua/Peng Yuhuan) – At 7:50 PM on the 25th, Typhoon “Geme” No. 3 of the year landed on the coast of Xiuwu District, Putian City, Fujian Province. After the landing, the coastal areas of Zhejiang will enter the peak period of rain and wind. Meteorologists in Zhejiang Province have indicated that although the typhoon lands in Fujian, its strength is significant, with a wide cloud system that can still cover most of Zhejiang. The southern and coastal regions of Zhejiang will experience noticeable impacts from the rain and wind.
From the 24th to the 25th, reporters arrived in the southern part of Zhejiang, Wenzhou, to experience the changes in weather leading up to the typhoon. In the evening of the 24th, the weather in Wenzhou started to deteriorate. The waiting area for ride-hailing services was filled with passengers waiting. The sky suddenly began to rain, and within a few minutes, the rain intensified, transitioning to heavy rain mode. Passengers quickly took out their umbrellas or sought shelter under the awnings. The heavy rain lasted for about half an hour before the rain gradually subsided.
“The weather is like this every time a typhoon approaches. Rain falls when the clouds come, and it stops when the clouds move away. But when the typhoon actually lands, the scale of the rain and wind will definitely be different.” said Mr. Wu, a ride-hailing driver. According to his experience, even though the typhoon does not directly hit Zhejiang, its power cannot be underestimated. The residents of Wenzhou have their own methods to withstand the rain and wind. Early in the morning on the 25th, after a night of rain and wind, branches and leaves scattered on the roads. Many sanitation workers were busy cleaning the roads. Nearby, some businesses had already prepared sandbags at their entrances.
Throughout the day, the clouds in Wenzhou increased, but the sun occasionally appeared, with temperatures rising, still indicating a summer season. As the clouds moved quickly, the weather was alternately sunny and rainy. By the evening, the wind in Wenzhou’s city center was gradually strengthening, with trees along the streets swaying in the wind. It was already challenging for many pedestrians to walk with an umbrella against the wind.
According to the meteorological department, due to the impact of “Geme”, there will be heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southern regions of Wenzhou from the 25th to the 26th, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall. In the northern regions, there will be heavy rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall. The coastal winds in Wenzhou will be 11 to 13 Beaufort scale, with waves up to 8 meters high.
Under the “Wenzhou Flood Control, Typhoon Prevention, and Drought Relief Emergency Response Plan,” the Wenzhou Flood Control Headquarters raised the typhoon emergency response to level II on the 25th at 12 PM. All passenger routes in Wenzhou have been suspended, and multiple trains at Wenzhou South Station have been stopped. The Wenzhou Flood Control Headquarters further analyzed the risks in a video conference, requiring the focus on the “six defense systems” of city defense, reservoir defense, embankment defense, pond defense, sea defense, and river defense, and the refinement of risk control links and units. Rapid and orderly evacuation of people, ensuring that no one is left behind, and ensuring the availability of disaster relief and emergency rescue materials.
As “Geme” carries a large amount of moisture inland, heavy rainfall will continue in the areas it passes through. The meteorological department advises the public to closely monitor the latest forecasts and warnings, adjust their travel plans accordingly, and avoid visiting mountainous areas, islands, and coastal areas when the typhoon is active.
