News Content: [Global Perspective] Yan Xuetong: NATO’s Continuous Involvement in Wars is Unfavorable for World Peace

From July 5th to 7th, the 12th World Peace Forum was successfully held in Beijing, with Professor Yan Xuetong, the Dean of the Institute of International Relations at Tsinghua University, invited to attend and be interviewed by Xinhua News Agency. He delved into the critical challenges and peace aspirations facing the international community.

Yan Xuetong pointed out that, over the past few decades, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has successfully maintained its existence and development through continuous involvement in various conflicts and wars. However, this model of maintaining survival through war is fundamentally at odds with the global pursuit of peace, cooperation, and stability. He argues that NATO’s continuous military actions not only incur massive economic and resource costs, but also exacerbate regional tensions, posing a potential threat to world peace.

“Such a mode of behavior by NATO is essentially a zero-sum game mentality, where the loss of others is seen as a means to gain one’s own interests,” Yan further explained. “This mindset not only fails to promote international cooperation and trust, but may instead lead to more conflicts and confrontations, further undermining global peace and stability.”

Addressing this issue, Yan proposed several suggestions. First, the international community should advocate for resolving disputes through dialogue, negotiation, and cooperation, reducing unnecessary military interventions. Second, governments should strengthen compliance with international law, particularly the UN Charter and international human rights law, to maintain international order and peace through legal means. Lastly, the global community should work together to build a more just, equal, and inclusive international system, ensuring that all countries can develop in a peaceful and prosperous environment.

Yan’s viewpoint has sparked significant attention and discussion among the attendees and the international community. He believes that only by abandoning Cold War thinking and collectively building a new international relationship based on cooperation and mutual benefit can we truly realize the world’s long-term peace and shared prosperity aspirations.
