XINING, April 2 (Xinhua) – The Xining National Crop Germplasm Repository, a one-of-a-kind global seed sanctuary, has securely safeguarded the agricultural lifeline for half a century. As of April 2, 2024, within this unique “bank” nestled on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, 459,228 precious crop germplasm samples are stored, representing 220 types including cereals, cotton, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, tea, sugar, forage, and more – a verdant repository of knowledge that whispers the story of life’s diversity and resilience.
According to an associate researcher from Qinghai University’s College of Agriculture and Forestry, this repository is not only a critical national strategic resource but also a lifeline for global agricultural research. Among the holdings are 11,705 superior varieties approved at the ministerial level, embodying the fruits of agricultural science and technology and providing a robust foundation for food security and sustainable agriculture in China and worldwide.
