UK Government, Electric Vehicles, Charging Stations

LONDON, March 18 (Xinhua) — The British government announced on Thursday that it will provide an additional £381 million in local electric vehicle (EV) funding to build thousands of new charging points across the country.

The funding will support the installation of charge points in a variety of locations, ranging from city centers to residential areas, as part of efforts to encourage more people and businesses to switch to EVs and reduce carbon emissions.

“Our investment will ensure that wherever you live in the UK, you can find a charge point near you,” said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

The funding will include support for rapid charging stations, which can charge an EV in a matter of minutes, as well as research and development for more efficient charging technologies and improving the availability and reliability of the charging network.

The investment in charging infrastructure is part of the government’s wider plan to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon transport system, which includes a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030.
