BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) — China’s rural areas have seen their tap water coverage rate exceed 90 percent, with further guarantees for safe drinking water, according to the Ministry of Water Resources on Monday.
The achievement is a result of the Chinese government’s long-standing emphasis on rural infrastructure development and continuous investment. Accompanied by rapid economic development in rural areas and increasing living standards of farmers, relevant departments under the State Council have been pushing forward the rural drinking water safety project with policy support and financial guarantees, thus enhancing water supply capacity and service levels.
Over the past five years, China has invested more than 1 trillion yuan ($156 billion) in improving rural water supply conditions. Through measures such as building water treatment plants, upgrading old pipelines, and enhancing water quality monitoring capabilities, the quality of water for rural residents has been effectively improved. Currently, over 600 million rural residents enjoy safe and convenient tap water services.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Water Resources indicated that the next step will be to deepen reforms in rural water resources management, optimize water resource allocation, and accelerate the filling of infrastructure gaps in rural areas. The goal is to ensure that the rural tap water coverage rate reaches over 95 percent by 2025, bringing more convenience to farmers and closing the gap with urban living standards.
