Thailand is bracing for an extreme heatwave this summer, withtemperatures expected to exceed 52 degrees Celsius, the country’s Public Health Ministry warned on Thursday.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told a news conference that the Meteorological Department is predicting unusually high temperatures this summer, with highs of over 52C possible.

Anutin warned that theextreme heat could have serious health impacts, including heatstroke, dehydration, heat cramps and heat exhaustion. He urged the public to take precautions, such as drinking plenty of water, avoiding going outside during the hottest hours of the day, wearing loose-fitting and breathable clothing, and replenishing electrolytes.

The Thai Meteorological Department has previously issued a warning that Thailand is likely to experience hotter-than-usual weather this summer. The department said that the average temperature this summer is expected to be 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than normal due to the El Nino phenomenon.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued aheatwave warning and urged local authorities to prepare for the extreme heat. The DDPM advised the public to limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day and to take precautions to stay cool.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health also warned the public about the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. The hot and humid conditions are favorable for mosquito breeding, increasing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya.

The Ministry of Public Health advised the public to take measures to prevent mosquito bites, such as wearing long sleeves and pants, using mosquito nets and repellents, and promptly removing stagnant water.
