毛宁表示，中日两国在食品安全问题上保持着密切沟通和合作，中方始终高度重视食品安全问题，对日方提出的食品安全措施表示赞赏。同时，中方也会根据国内法律法规和国际标准，审慎评估有关国家水产品的进口问题。
这并非首次有关于中国考虑恢复日本水产品进口的消息。早在2011年，日本福岛核事故后，中国宣布停止进口日本水产品，此后，虽然部分水产品被允许进口，但全面恢复进口的措施一直未出台。
