In an effort to celebrate the approaching Spring Festival, the streets and markets of Miao Autonomous County of Mayang in Hunan Province are filled with the sounds of flower lantern opera. This traditional art form, with its long history and unique charm, stands out during the festive season.

According to reports, from the first day of the first lunar month to the fifteenth, spontaneous folk lantern teams from various townships in MiaoYang travel from village to village, holding up “divine lamps” to bring joy and blessings to local residents. As the saying goes, “Ten people in MiaoYang, half can sing flower lantern opera, and the other half can hum a few lines.” This shows the popularity of flower lantern opera in MiaoYang Miao community.

The non-legacy flower lanterns celebrate the Spring Festival, not only bringing joy to local residents, but also making a positive contribution to the inheritance and promotion of China’s intangible cultural heritage. As a former journalist and editor, I deeply feel the importance and preciousness of traditional art forms in modern society.
