After a long-lasting and protracted battle, the EU’s 27 member states confirmed the final text of the “AI Act” on Friday. This crucial legislation has finally cleared a major hurdle with the approval of the bill, marking an essential step for Europe to regulate and manage AI technologies.
The EU initially proposed AI legislation in 2021 to ensure the legal and compliant application of AI within its borders. However, with the emergence of large language models such as ChatGPT in late 2022, EU legislators realized the necessity of regulating these technologies, adding provisions targeting large language models and AIGC sectors to the bill.
The legislation aims to protect citizen privacy, ensure fair competition, and prevent data abuse, impacting all AI applications and services within the EU. Companies found violating the rules will face severe fines and other sanctions.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “We are laying a solid foundation for the future of AI in Europe. This legislation will ensure that AI development in the EU remains consistent with our values and ethical guidelines.
