Title: SpaceX’s ‘Dragon’ Launches Private Astronauts to International Space Station, Marking Historic Collaboration

Keywords: private crew, Dragon spacecraft, International Space Station

The American private space company Axiom Space has successfully launched a “private” astronaut crew aboard the SpaceX “Dragon” spacecraft and arrived at the International Space Station (ISS). This is the third “private” astronaut mission organized by Axiom Space, and the first time that all paid seats were taken by national space agencies.

The mission, called “Ax-3,” is a commercial cooperation project between Axiom Space and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States. The four astronauts on board are Michael Lopez-Alegria, a former NASA astronaut from Spain and the United States; Walter Villanueva from Italy; Alper Gizeraf from Turkey; and Marcus Wäthén from Sweden. Lopez-Alegria serves as the mission commander, Villanueva as the pilot, Gizeraf and Wäthén as mission specialists.

After arriving at the ISS, they were warmly welcomed by seven existing astronauts from Japan, Denmark, the United States, and Russia. ISS Commander Andreas Mågensen welcomed the new members through a live stream: “We have increased the number of countries represented on the ISS from four to eight, which fully reflects the spirit of international cooperation that supports this wonderful space station.” Next, the new crew will stay on the ISS for about two weeks to conduct 30 experiments, including microgravity research and technology demonstrations.

Axiom Space was founded in 2016 by Michael Sufrianidi and entrepreneur Cam Gaffarian, who co-founded it together with former NASA International Space Station Program Manager Michael Lopez-Alegria. In addition to organizing private space journeys, the company is also committed to developing spacesuits for future NASA lunar missions. Furthermore, they are building a commercial space station and plan to initially connect it to the ISS before separating and operating independently until the ISS retires.

Over the past two years, Axiom Space has successfully organized three “private” astronaut crews to fly to the ISS, charging each passenger at least $55 million (currently around RMB 396 million).
