海南省军区政治工作局“琼崖国防”公号披露，近日，2023年度海南省军区总结表彰颁奖仪式在海口隆重举行。海南省军区司令员王培杰、政治委员韦昌进、省人民政府陈怀宇副省长等军地领导出席仪式并为获奖人员颁奖。消息证实，“战斗英雄”韦昌进少将已经履新海南省军区政委，此前他担任上海警备区副政委兼纪委书记。资料显示，韦昌进，1965年11月出生，江苏溧水人。高中毕业后，韦昌进成为解放军鲁中某部6连的一名新兵。
1985年3月，年仅20岁的他随部队参加边境作战。时年7月19日凌晨，敌军以2个营加强1个连的兵力，向韦昌进坚守的6号哨位阵地猛烈进攻。激战中，他被弹片击中左眼、穿透右胸，全身22处负伤，仍强忍剧痛坚持战斗。
当身边的4位战友相继倒下后，韦昌进毅然用报话机向上级呼喊“为了祖国，为了胜利，向我开炮！向我开炮啊！”用生命引导炮兵先后打退敌军8次连排规模反扑，坚守6号哨位11个小时，牢牢守住了阵地，被誉为“活着的王成”。
央视《面对面》栏目中，韦昌进曾自述称，之所以向上级呼喊“向我开炮”，是因为只有对准自己打，才可能把哨位上的敌人打死。
“敌人火炮盖过来，当时钢盔就掉了，我的手就自然地朝着脸上这个地方按过去了，一按着这边手心里按了一个肉团子，我就没有多想，扯了它吧。可我一扯的时候，当时疼得我，这个眼窝袋有个筋，这时候我知道可能是我的左眼睛掉出来了，当我意识到是眼球的时候，既然是眼球，我又把它塞回去。”韦昌进说。
战斗结束后，韦昌进被中央军委授予“战斗英雄”荣誉称号，荣立一等功。
《中国民兵》杂志介绍，那次战斗结束后，多处负伤的韦昌进在医院昏迷了七天七夜，经持续抢救后苏醒。后来，他的左眼受重伤被摘取，安装了一只义眼。直到现在，他的身体里还残留着四枚弹片，每次过安检时，都会引发响铃。

中国军网介绍，走下硝烟弥漫的战场，韦昌进又走上了新的阵地，投身于全民国防教育，甘做红色基因的传承者、革命精神的弘扬者、民族英雄的捍卫者。
他先后在蓬莱人武部、济南警备区、枣庄军分区任职。2020年，韦昌进晋升少将，出任广西军区副政委兼纪委书记。次年，他出任上海警备区副政委兼纪委书记，直至此次履新。
2009年，韦昌进被评为“100位新中国成立后为国防和军队建设作出重大贡献、具有重大影响的先进模范人物”，2017年被授予“八一勋章”，2018年被授予“改革先锋”称号。
政知君曾和韦昌进“近距离接触”。
2019年，全国政协十三届二次全会委员通道上，韦昌进以十三届全国政协委员身份出席。彼时，他现场回答政知君提问称：“对于征兵确实感触良多，首先是教育文化水平的提高。2018年新入伍的大学生士兵占到了60%，不少本科生和研究生投身军营。他们除了怀揣学历证书，很多人还装着职业技能证书、获奖证书。”
回答完政知君的问题之后，韦昌进还现场打了一则“征兵广告”。“说起征兵，我也想借这个机会做一个广告。人们常说军营部队是所大学校，作为一名老兵，我最希望看到越来越多的优秀青年携笔从戎，身穿国防绿，和我们一起守卫祖国的安全。”
