China’s commercial aerospace industry is set to reach a new milestone with the launch of the Li箭二号 rocket, which will transport a low-cost cargo spacecraft developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Micro Satellite Innovation Institute. The confirmation meeting for the overall solution of China’s low-cost cargo transportation system for the space station was recently held in Shanghai.
The Li箭二号 rocket is expected to conduct its first flight mission in 2025, marking the first time a Chinese commercial aerospace company has participated in the development and launch of a low-cost cargo mission for China’s space station. The mission will also involve the launch of low-orbit internet constellation satellites.
The Li箭二号 rocket is an intermediate-sized liquid rocket with a diameter of 3.35 meters, a total length of 53 meters, a take-off mass of 628 tons, and a take-off thrust of 766 tons. It has the capabilities of launching cargo spacecraft into sun-synchronous orbits, low-earth orbits, and transfer orbits. The rocket will become the main force for China’s low-cost cargo spacecraft, satellite internet networking, space science satellite launches, and deep space exploration missions.
Previously, the China Manned Space Program Office released a solicitation for the overall solution of China’s low-cost cargo transportation system for the space station in May 2023. China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and the Micro Satellite Innovation Institute conducted joint research and development on the key technologies, successfully bidding for the project, and received overall support from the China Manned Space Program, entering the detailed design stage.
The implementation of this low-cost cargo mission will significantly promote the development of China’s commercial aerospace industry and enhance China’s competitiveness in the international aerospace field. Furthermore, it will help reduce the operating costs of the space station and lay a solid foundation for the sustainable development of China’s space station.
