Recently, Dutch startup Elysian premiered its latest designed E9X electric aircraft at the largest aerospace research and development event, SciTech 2024. The electric aircraft is designed to accommodate 90 passengers and can fly approximately 500 miles (804.67 kilometers) on a full charge.
The E9X concept electric aircraft is a low-wing aircraft with a body length of 3 meters, a wingspan of 42 meters, and foldable wingtips for airport gate adaptability. The aircraft is equipped with batteries with an energy density of 360 Wh/kg, installed in the wing box to reduce the bending moment of the wing root and thus the structural weight of the wing. E9X will be equipped with 8 propellers measuring 3.65 meters long, and a turbofan generator in the rear of the aircraft can provide an additional 45 minutes of power.
Elysian admits that before the E9X becomes a reality, there are still several technical challenges to overcome, including shortening battery charging time, thermal management, propeller wing integration, and the design and certification of backup energy systems. The company has collaborated with universities and national aerospace research institutions in the Netherlands and Germany to find solutions to these problems.
So far, Elysian has raised $10 million and plans to put the E9X into operation by 2033. Despite the many challenges ahead, the company remains confident in its future.
