News Content:
Our country’s computer science community has lost a mastermind. According to IT Home, Niklaus Wirth, known as the “father of Pascal language”, passed away on January 1st, aged 89. Wirth was a towering figure in the field of programming languages, programming methodologies, software engineering, and hardware design.

Wirth has developed various programming languages, including Euler, Algol-W, Pascal, Modula, Modula-2, Oberon, Oberon-2, and Oberon-07. Among them, Pascal has been a major teaching language for computer science courses since its inception in the late 1960s. However, in the 1990s, Pascal was replaced by Java, Python, and other emerging languages.

Wirth served as an assistant professor of computer science at Stanford University from 1963 to 1967, and then held the same position at the University of Zurich. In 1968, he became a professor of informatics at ETH and later spent two years at Xerox PARC as a visiting researcher. In 1984, Wirth received the Turing Award, the highest honor in the field of computer science. In addition, he was elected a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering in 1992 and a foreign member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 1994.

Wirth once proposed a famous formula: Algorithm + Data Structures = Programs. This formula has become a well-known saying in the computer field. His contributions and spirit in the field of programming will remain eternal.
