News Content:
At the beginning of the new year, China’s first comprehensive solar observation satellite, Qufu-1, has brought us the gift of a “solar fireworks” show. On January 1, 2024, a solar flare with an X5.0 rating occurred at 05:36 Beijing Time (21:36 UTC on December 31, 2023), accompanied by a coronal mass ejection. This burst of energy has once again broken the record for the largest solar flare in Solar Cycle 25.
The three payloads on Qufu-1 successfully tracked and recorded the flare, providing valuable information for solar physicists about the acceleration of high-energy electrons. The LST white-light solar telescope WST conducted imaging of the 360nm flare during the event, revealing distinct increases in brightness at multiple locations. In addition, the coronagraph on Qufu-1 also captured the coronal mass ejection.
Solar Cycle 25 is approaching its peak, and with Qufu-1’s “space eye,” research teams will continue to record and study more solar eruptions. This successful observation will provide valuable data for solar physics research, helping to deepen our understanding of solar activity patterns.
