Iran’s first electronic game: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
Keywords: Iran, first electronic game, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
In 1995, Iran launched its first electronic game, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. This game was developed by Ramin ZafarAzizi, an Iranian game developer. Using assembly and Qbasic programming languages, the game has a 2D side-scrolling platform design similar to the original The game features 140 art assets and 5 levels, with an intermission animation for each level. The game’s name is derived from the classic Persian folklore \”The Story of the Forty Thieves.\” During the 1979-1989 period, Iran experienced political instability, and the game and technology industries were in a state of stagnation. With the end of the war, Iranians began to learn about the technological advancements made in the foreign technology sector. In the early 1990s, with the advent of computers and game hardware for the general public, some people started trying to develop games on their own. Ramin ZafarAzizi was one of them. He sold some computer software and hardware in his father’s toy shop and used his free time to develop Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. The game was released in December 1995, with most copies sold in his father’s toy shop.
Although Ramin is possibly the first game developer in Iran’s history, during the same period, another developer named Mahamad Samandari also released the first Commodore 64 game in Iran, Beauty and the Beast, in 1996. Like Ramin, Mahamad had to promote his game alone.
Ramin spent five years creating two games, but due to financial constraints, he had to leave the game development industry. However, he recently founded his new studio Rahamin and is currently working on his third project, Zoono, an action-adventure game similar to Hell’s Edge. Rahamin is the only developer of the project.
Although the Iranian game industry is still in its early stages, Ramin and other game developers like Mahamad are exploring and innovating. In the future, the Iranian game industry may achieve more accomplishments.
