According to CNBC, Ford CEO Jim Farley accused the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) of making the contract negotiation a \”hostage\” due to the temporary suspension of the construction of the $35 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan. The UAW strike has now entered its third week, with the strike spreading to more factories, including Ford’s operating plants. Ford previously announced plans for four battery plants in the future, including three joint ventures and one fully-owned subsidiary, using Ningde Times’ licensed battery technology. However, this week, Ford suspended one of the plants due to potential incentives from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and concerns about labor costs. Farley said that the UAW is trying to use the battery plant as a bargaining chip. These battery plants do not yet exist. They are mostly joint ventures, and workers have not been hired yet, and will not be hired in the future for many years.
