Beijing, April 2, 2025 – China’s automotive market presented a mixed bag of results in March 2025, with some manufacturers experiencing robust growth while others faced declines, according to the latest sales and delivery figures released by major automakers. BYD Continues its Reign:

BYD, the electric vehicle (EV) giant, continued its impressive growth trajectory, reporting sales of 377,420 vehicles in March, a 24.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This figure includes sales from its sub-brands: Fang Cheng Bao (8,051 units), Denza (12,620 units), and Yangwang (133 units).   • Chery Group saw a significant increase, selling 214,770 vehicles in March, a 18.3% year-on-year increase. Chery Automobile specifically sold 197,614 vehicles, up 10.9% year-on-year. The group’s cumulative sales for the first quarter reached 620,000 vehicles, a 17.1% increase, with exports reaching 255,000 vehicles, maintaining its position as China’s leading auto exporter.
  • FAW Hongqi achieved a first-quarter sales volume exceeding 109,100 units, representing an 8.8% year-on-year increase. NEV sales surged by over 43.8%. The Hongqi H5 was the best-selling Chinese brand B-segment luxury sedan, and the Hongqi HS5 was the best-selling Chinese brand B-segment luxury gasoline SUV.
  • Deepal Auto delivered 24,371 vehicles in March, a substantial 86.7% year-on-year increase and a 30.0% month-on-month increase.
  • FAW-Volkswagen reported total vehicle sales of 154,000 units in March, with gasoline vehicle sales increasing by 1.4%. The Volkswagen brand sold 87,000 units, Audi 56,000 units, and Jetta 11,000 units.
  • NIO delivered 15,039 vehicles in March, a 26.7% year-on-year increase. First-quarter deliveries totaled 42,094 vehicles, a 40.1% increase. NIO’s cumulative deliveries reached 713,658 vehicles.
  • BAIC New Energy saw its sales soar to 14,268 units in March, a 93.1% year-on-year increase and a 173.8% increase for the first quarter. BAIC BJEV saw sales of 13,018 units in March, setting a new record.

However, some automakers experienced a decline in sales:

  • Great Wall Motor reported sales of 97,991 vehicles in March, a 2.28% year-on-year decrease. While NEV sales increased by 15.04% to 25,174 units, sales of its key brands like Haval (-2.45%), ORA (-53.9%), and Tank (-8.29%) declined. Only Wey saw an increase of 29.45%.

Other Key Highlights:

  • Changan Qiyuan sold 15,274 vehicles in March, with cumulative sales exceeding 220,000 units.
  • China FAW sold 762,000 vehicles in the first quarter, a 2.5% year-on-year increase. Sales of self-owned NEVs increased by 152% to 59,000 units, and sales of self-owned brands increased by 7.4% to 223,000 units. Sales of joint venture brands reached 539,000 units.
