A casualty of technological evolution, Meta’s built-in fitness tracker for its VR headsets, Quest Move, has officially been discontinued due to an aging API.
San Francisco, CA – Meta has officially retired its Meta Quest Move application, a built-in fitness tracker for its Quest VR headsets. The move, announced earlier this month, comes as Meta rolls out its v74 software update to the Quest line. The company cited an outdated Application Programming Interface (API) as the reason for the app’s demise.
First introduced during the Quest 2 era, Meta Quest Move tracked users’ movements and estimated calorie burn during VR sessions. Users could set daily and weekly fitness goals within the app and view their progress in a convenient overlay while using other VR applications.
However, with the rollout of the v74 update, the app has been removed from user libraries. Meta has also removed Quest Move statistics reports from its Meta Horizon application. This means that users who update to the latest system will lose access to the app and all associated fitness data.
The decision to discontinue Quest Move highlights the rapid pace of technological advancement and the challenges of maintaining older software. While the app provided a basic fitness tracking functionality, its reliance on an outdated API ultimately led to its obsolescence.
Impact on Users:
The discontinuation of Quest Move will undoubtedly disappoint some users who relied on the app to track their fitness progress within VR. The loss of accumulated fitness data will also be a source of frustration for those who have diligently used the app over time.
Future of VR Fitness:
While Quest Move is gone, the broader trend of VR fitness remains strong. Numerous third-party applications offer more robust fitness tracking and workout experiences within VR. These apps often integrate with external heart rate monitors and offer personalized training programs.
Conclusion:
The sunsetting of Meta Quest Move serves as a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of technology. While the app’s discontinuation may be disappointing for some, it also paves the way for more advanced and feature-rich VR fitness solutions. As VR technology continues to mature, we can expect to see even more innovative approaches to integrating fitness and virtual reality.
