Beijing, March 31, 2025 – NIO, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is planning to open its battery swapping network to other automakers, according to Senior Vice President Shen Fei. The announcement, made during the China EV100 Forum, addresses growing concerns about the viability and scalability of battery swapping technology, which has been largely championed by NIO.

The perception that NIO is the only company investing in battery swapping is inaccurate, Shen Fei stated during an interview at the forum, as reported by Sina Finance. He pointed out that while NIO operates over 3,000 of the 4,000+ battery swap stations currently in operation across China, the remaining 1,000+ stations indicate that other players are indeed active in the field.

NIO’s move towards network openness signals a significant shift in strategy. The company plans to offer standardized battery swap stations to other EV manufacturers, fostering collaboration and potentially accelerating the adoption of battery swapping as a mainstream charging solution. Shen Fei revealed that NIO is already in discussions with several companies regarding this initiative.

This expansion also includes opening up the construction of battery swap stations to partners. Starting last year and continuing this year, we are seeing increasing investment in battery swap stations from our partners, Shen Fei explained. We hope that through more strategic cooperation, everyone can leverage their respective strengths to improve overall efficiency.

The decision to open the network comes as NIO acknowledges the challenges and costs associated with pioneering battery swapping technology. At the same forum, NIO founder and CEO William Li admitted that the company had paid a significant tuition fee in developing and deploying its battery swap infrastructure, including deploying charging piles in less-than-ideal locations.

Analysis:

NIO’s strategy shift towards openness is a pragmatic move. By sharing its battery swapping infrastructure, the company can potentially:

  • Reduce its financial burden: Sharing the cost of building and maintaining swap stations with partners.
  • Increase utilization rates: More vehicles using the network will improve the return on investment for each station.
  • Promote standardization: Encouraging other automakers to adopt compatible battery standards.
  • Accelerate adoption: Making battery swapping a more convenient and accessible option for EV owners.

However, challenges remain. Convincing other automakers to adopt NIO’s battery standards and integrate with its network will require significant negotiation and collaboration. Furthermore, ensuring a seamless user experience across different brands will be crucial for the success of the open network.

Conclusion:

NIO’s decision to open its battery swapping network represents a bold step towards fostering a more collaborative and sustainable EV ecosystem in China. While challenges lie ahead, this move has the potential to accelerate the adoption of battery swapping technology and solidify NIO’s position as a leader in the EV industry. The success of this initiative will depend on NIO’s ability to forge strong partnerships and ensure a seamless experience for all users of the network.
